Tax Credit Extension has Passed!!!

Earlier today the House of Representatives passed legislation to extend and expand the $8,000 first-time homebuyer tax credit, which was approved by the Senate this week. The legislation will be sent to the President, and upon his signature, made law. NAMB strongly advocated for an extension and expansion of the homebuyer tax credit, and considers this a victory for consumers, the housing industry, and NAMB.

Under the legislation, homebuyers will qualify for the tax credit until April 30, 2009 (as long as they have entered a binding contract), and have an additional 2 months (until June 30, 2009) to close the transaction. Borrower income limits have also been increased to $125,000 for individuals and $225,000 for couples (up from $75,000 and $150,000 respectively under the current program). The legislation also includes a tax credit not exceeding $6,500 for move up buyers who have owned their current homes for at least 5 years.

Charlotte Shakespeare Festival 2009
The Charlotte Shakespeare Festival returns to the Queen City for a fourth year, presenting free family-friendly performances of classic plays through June 13. The festival kicks off Sunday, May 31, with the romantic comedy “Twelfth Night” outdoors at The Green Uptown. Wednesdays are Shakespeare trivia nights - come early at 7:15 p.m. for a chance to win prizes. Sundays are family days - free Shakespeare workshops held at 5 p.m. prior to the show. Picnics are welcome. No reservations required.
The Charlotte Shakespeare Festival is also offering free Shakespeare performance workshops for young people (ages 10-18) and their families on Sundays at 5 p.m. prior to performances. The workshops are taught by professional actors/educators and will consist of theatre games, exercises and readings from the script. Bring the family and enjoy a fun hands-on experience with one of Shakespeare’s plays. No experience necessary.

Skirt After Work - Go Red for Women

Today, Wednesday, June 3rd from 5-8, Skirt readers and staff will be at The Wine Shop at Foxcroft for an evening of networking and fun! The event offers $7 featured wines by the glass, and $7 Charcuterie and Cheese Plates. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Go Red for Women, the American Heart Association's movement to increase awareness of women's risk of heart disease. The Wine Shop at Foxcroft is located at 7824 Fairview Road.

Get a Feel for Life Uptown

Today begins the Urban Living Showcase to highlight residential developments and properties in Uptown and South End. Starts on the roof of the EpiCentre with information about the various Uptown and South End locations.On Saturday, you will have many options. Trolley tours will leave EpiCentre every 20 minutes beginning at 11am, and guided walking tours will leave every half hour, also starting at 11am. Visitors can take the Lynx light-rail train to South End, as well. A skyline tour is available to see the best views from high-rise rooftops and penthouses Saturday from 10am to 3 pm.

Cycle Charlotte - Crank it UP Music Festival

The first Crank it UP Music Festival is coming to Charlotte this Saturday, May 9th. The event, which includes a 13 mile bike ride, post-ride food and entry into Amos' for the Music is just $20. The event begins at 5:30 with a casual twilight bike ride through uptown Charlotte. If you choose to forgo the 13 mile bike ride, enjoy the music at Amos' beginning at 6:00. Musicians include: The Byron McMurry Trio, The Custom Grass Revue, and Lindy Dobbins and the Red Velvet Manx. Tickets for this all ages show are $18 at the door and $15 in advance. All proceeds will go to the Tarheel Trailblazers and Dirt Divas for trail-building projects in our local community. Although there is plenty of on-site parking, attendees are encouraged to ride the Lynx Light Rail if possible, to promote the use of the Light Rail for bike-commuting.

A Taste for Fashion

Join the ladies of 107.9 the Link, as they light up the runway and share some of the latest fashion and newest designs at Morrison. Morrison is located on the corner of Sharon and Colony in SouthPark. There will be beer and wine available, all proceeds benefit The Western NC Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The Link will also be giving away great prizes throughout the night. The month of events starts out this Thursday, May 7th from 6-9. Candy will be hosting and and theme will be accessories. Art and Soul of South End April 25-26 2009

Round up the troops for family bonding pursuits sure to be crowd pleasers. Art and Soul of South End takes to the streets this month, combining dancing, singing, performances, and lots of visual masterpieces. Hundreds of local artisans will have pieces available for purchase, but bring the kids for interactive salsa, swing, and hip-hop dance instruction or for hands-on sculpting, weaving, and drawing lessons.

Phase 2 Meeting for East Blvd. Pedscape

The East Boulevard Pedscape Phase 2 meeting will be held on Thursday, Feb. 26 at 6:30 p.m. at Dilworth United Methodist Church.
